We employ a highly qualified staff to care for
the children, and with the help of physicians,
therapists, counselors, and teachers, work to
ensure that each child is given the opportunity
to grow. Our staff of child care workers, a
program coordinator, home manager, and
administrator provide 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week care and activities, coordinate medical
care, therapy, homework, outings, summer trips
(like annual tent camping in Tahoe, and family
camp in the redwoods). An individual home
program is developed for each child by our
Program Director. Specialized equipment is
sought or made, as needed.
If you were to come visit (and I hope you
do), you would see the children using
therapeutic equipment and exercising, doing
homework, playing with educational software &
computer games, eating together and enjoying
"family time," where the whole family plays
games, sings, reads books and Bible stories, or
makes up their own "game shows."
If you stayed longer you'd see kids coming
and going from school activities, children's
theater, swimming lessons, youth group, birthday
celebrations, etc. On Saturdays you could join
us for outings, and on Sundays we attend church
and Sunday school. During the week, our children
go to various public schools depending on their
specific needs and abilities.
The children's families are welcome to visit
at anytime and the children often go home for
weekend visits. Parents are kept informed of
significant developments in their child's skills
and needs, as well as, school, medical, and
program planning meetings.
The families of over 30 children have
benefited from our respite services. Overall,
the total number of families served through
respite, through the home, and through
information services each year ranges from 40 to
60, although the number of people who have been
touched by the children of Green Pastures, and
what goes on here, exceeds that amount greatly.
The vision of Green Pastures' staff and Board
of Directors also includes reaching out to the
community and educating them regarding issues
that a disabled person has to face. We believe
that each person, disabled or not, is of great
worth, and can contribute positively to their
own community. We give presentations on
Disability Awareness to various groups, schools,
and churches, and provide information and
resource referral to the public regarding a host
of issues relating to disabilities.
